A study to Assess the Psychosocial Issues Associated with Covid-19 Pandemic among the Family Members of Third year B.Sc. Nursing Students in selected Colleges of Pathanamthitta District

ABSTRACT:

Background: In January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that Covid-19 is characterized as pandemic. It is a major health crisis affecting several nations. The crisis generates stresses throughout the population. This pandemic condition is leading the public to experience psychosocial problems such as post- traumatic stress disorders, psychological distress, depression and anxiety. Objectives: 1. To assess the psychosocial issues of family members of third year BSc nursing students regarding the covid-19 pandemic. 2. To find out the association between the psychosocial issues with demographic variables. 3. To implement psychosocial education to overcome the psychosocial issues related to covid -19 pandemic. Methodology: A Non-experimental descriptive survey design was used to assess the perceived psychosocial issues associated with COVID-19 pandemic among the family members. The study was conducted among 50 samples selected by inclusion and exclusion criteria through random sampling technique. The data was collected by using a baseline data questionnaire. The data were collected, tabulated and analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Chi-square test was used to find out the association between selected demographic variables and psychological issues. Results: In the present study, the finding shows that the 76% of the parents have moderate impact on daily life style. 64% of parents have a mild impact on finance. 61% of the parents have mild insomnia. 60% of the parents have moderate level of anxiety and depression. Conclusion: The study concludes that psychosocial issues are a common phenomenon among the parents and grandparents.

INTRODUCTION:

In January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that Covid-19 is characterized as pandemic. It is a major health crisis affecting several nations. The crisis generates stresses throughout the population.

 

Corona disease is spreading to many countries’ day to day. Only way to stay away from this crisis is prevention. Government and medical authorities took many preventive measures such as promoting hand washing, using personal protective equipment’s and quarantine. This affects the normal life of society. Parents and children’s life disrupt regarding the spread of coronavirus disease. Social distancing, self- quarantine, death and spreading of Covid -19 will develop strong reactions such as anxiety, depression and difficulty in sleep. These prolonged psychosocial issues may result in mental health conditions and long-term repercussion on the functioning and coping capacities of family members. Many psychiatrists and medical articles point out the importance of finding the psychosocial problems among families related to corona to regain their normal life.

 

PSYCHOSOCIAL CAUSES:

Anxiety:

One of the major psychosocial cause is anxiety. As the number of cases increasing and media is showing daily new cases as well as death rates occurring in state/world- wide. This is leading them to fear and anxiety. Any small symptoms of cough or headache in their children is making people anxious. People are more prone to anxiety when their own relatives or neighbors are been quarantined. Moreover, people are unable to make decision for taking vaccination and in some places shortage of vaccine is another issue.

 

Depression:

Nowadays depression is as common as any other medical issues like hypertension or diabetes. During covid situation people are more prone to depression as they are facing lot of issues like joblessness, financial loss, inability to full fill their daily needs, death of loved ones has been major cause in developing depression in this covid crisis. Moreover, individual facing issues like lack of interest in daily activities or pleasurable activities, feeling of worthlessness or guilty.

 

Insomnia:

Persistent excessive worry and over whelming emotions about a number of concerns, such as health problems or finances, and a sense of something bad is going to happen is one of the causative factors to develop insomnia. As people are literally locked in their home, they are unable to go for work due to lockdown situations, public are facing sleep problems and feeling restlessness.

 

Lifestyle changes:

Covid crisis has bring about an impact in our daily lifestyle also. Individuals’ health hygiene is matter of concern. People are made aware for strict follow up hand hygiene, touching here and there is making people anxious whether they can develop covid disease or not. Changes has occurred in many ways like people are restricted to visit religious places, family functions or gatherings are strictly prohibited. Children school and college had shutdown had major impact in students career development. Moreover, challenges faced by society when government is taking extreme step for travelling.

 

Financial crisis:

The frequent concern was expressed due to prolonged lockdown situation resulting into economic crisis. People are facing loss of job in various sector. Parents are facing financial crisis to pay their children’s school or college fees. Even though medical treatment and current situation like hike in each grocery items, petrol has brought common people in more stressful condition.

 

Technology in Use:

Parents are facing another issue where their children are getting addicted to the usage of mobile or other electronic gadgets. In this crisis situation as school colleges were made mandatory to take online classes and students who are less than 10 years of age are also been seen to study through the electronic devices. Continuous use of mobile phones has brought their kids lot of physical effects like eye strains, concentration problems and literally they are facing serious medical issues in their young age itself.

 

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

A study to assess the psychosocial issues associated with covid-19 pandemic among the family members of third year B.Sc. nursing students in selected colleges of Pathanamthitta. District.

 

OBJECTIVES:

1.         To assess the psychosocial issues of family members of third year BSc nursing students regarding the covid-19 pandemic.

2.         To find out the association between the psychosocial issues with demographic variables.

 

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Research Approach: Descriptive approach

Research         Design:      Non-Experimental     Descriptive Survey Design

Population: Parents

Sample: Parents & Grandparents of selected colleges of Pathanamthitta Dist.

Sample Size: 50

Sampling Technique: Non-probability; Convenient Sampling technique.

Tools: Structured Questionnaire Section I: Sociodemographic Variables Section II: Structured Questionnaire

 

RESULTS:

Section A: Distribution of demographic variables Finding related to demographical characteristics:

In the present study the distribution of parents to various demographic variables revealed that 48% of sample belongs to age group of 35-50 years and 38% belongs to age group of 51-65 years and 10% belongs to age group of 66-80 years and 4% belongs to age group of 80Years above. It is evident from the table that 66% of samples were males and 34% of samples were females and 74%


belongs to Christian background and 24%belongs to Hindu’s background and 2% belongs to Muslim background. 100% of samples were married. Among the samples 58% of mothers and 30% were fathers and 2% were grandfathers and 10% were grandmothers. Among the samples, 12% had primary education and 46% had secondary education and 40% are graduates and 2% are post graduates. From all these samples 76% were unemployed and 24% were employed. 80% of samples lived in rural areas and 20% lived in urban areas.

 

Section B: Perceived psychosocial issues regarding Covid 19 Pandemic:

The findings of the study have shown that all the parents have perceived psychosocial issues either in mild or moderate or severe levels regarding covid 19 pandemic. Out of 50 respondents, 76% parents perceived moderate impact on the daily lifestyle. 64% of the parents perceived mild impact on finance. 61% of the parents have mild insomnia and 60% perceived moderate anxiety and depression.

The findings of the study have shown that there is an association between the selected demographic variables and psychosocial issues regarding covid 19 pandemic. Chi square test was used to find the association between selected demographic variables: i.e., age, gender, educational status. Probability (P) is lesser than the predetermined significance. i.e., P>0.05 for all selected variables. Therefore, there is a significant association between selected demographic variables and psychosocial issues regarding covid 19 pandemic.


CONCLUSION:

Covid-19 pandemic condition is increasing and in some part of the country is coming across with second and third wave. Psychological and social wellbeing is the important aspect, due care needed from the government authorities to promote health awareness programs, mental health care to both individual and in community level. Proper counselling to be promoted at earliest stage for all age group.

 

RECOMMENDATIONS:

·           A similar study can be done on large scale to assess the parents perceptive towards psychosocial issues among their children’s

·           A comparative study can be done among parents and grandparents to assess the psychosocial issues.

·           A similar study should be done among other health care professionals.

·           A planned health teaching can be carried and by using other teaching strategies i.e., self-instructional module, computer assisted instruction and video films on to decrease the psychosocial issues.
